Say goodbye to the "active waste-man" type of carbon reduction, environmentally friendly buildings will be the stars of tomorrow

The concept of carbon neutrality is not unfamiliar to many people, and in response to national policies, policies to actively promote this goal have been introduced one after another, and effective changes have been made in various industries based on this goal.

However, is the so-called "carbon neutral" direction we are expecting today really effective? Depending on each individual's understanding, there is a great deal of variability and misalignment.

The lecture on "Carbon Neutral Misconceptions and Realistic Pathways" by Liu Ke, an internationally renowned energy expert and director of the Clean Energy Research Institute of SUSTech, has refreshed our understanding of this goal and given us a new understanding of the main driving directions needed to help achieve this goal!

Carbon Emissions and Energy Issues

The achievement of the carbon neutrality target is, in essence, addressing the issue of carbon emissions (which includes the emission and recovery of carbon).

According to statistics, in 2020, China will emit about 10.3 billion tons of CO2, of which coal, oil and natural gas will emit about 9.5 billion tons, accounting for about 92%. In other words, the vast majority of CO2 emissions are generated from the combustion of coal, oil and natural gas, three fossil energy sources.

Then the root problem has surfaced - energy is the key.

Energy: replace or reduce carbon

Once the root cause of the problem is identified, the next step is to solve it properly.

When it comes to energy, most people think directly: If today's energy sources are no longer suitable for sustainable human survival and development, wouldn't it be better if we just replace them with clean energy?

Complete replacement, not realistic

Obviously, on the surface, this does seem to be both a direct and effective way to deal with the rapid development of our country in the past four decades, such as wind and solar energy and other clean energy fields have indeed made very great achievements. But the fossil energy sources that have been supplying the world for centuries are not so easy to replace.

From the comparison between wind, solar and coal power, in 2019, for example, the total amount of wind and solar power generation in China combined is equivalent to about 192 million tons of standard coal generation, and the total amount of wind and solar power generation on the Internet accounts for only about 12.5% of coal generation. As you can imagine, the possibility of trying to quickly replace fossil energy with clean energy is still relatively low.

In addition to the huge difference in supply, there is another very important issue in front of us, namely: the storage of electric energy.

According to President Liu Ke's speech: there are 8760 hours in a year, while the number of hours of solar power generation in China varies from place to place, ranging from 1100 to more than 2000 hours per year, with the national average being about 1450-1750 hours, and wind energy being about 2000 hours, totaling about 3450-3750 hours.

From a data standpoint, wind and solar can supply power for less than 50% of human survival needs at best, when power supply is not considered. And unfortunately, people's dream of large-scale energy storage technology is also not realistic, energy storage has always been the focus of research and development of new energy companies, but since the invention of lead-acid batteries for more than 100 years, humans have spent hundreds of billions of dollars in research and development funds to study energy storage, lead-acid battery energy storage only from 90 kWh / cubic meters to Tesla's 260 kWh / cubic meters. But the energy storage of gasoline can reach 8600 kWh/m3.

Obviously, with the current level of technology, to complete the complete replacement of old and new energy sources in the near future, so as to achieve the goal of "carbon neutrality", is slim ......

Carbon reduction may be the right solution

If complete energy replacement is only a "dream", what are the other effective ways to help achieve "carbon neutrality" by 2060, apart from the gradual conversion of new and renewable energy sources in parallel with fossil energy? What are the other effective ways to achieve carbon neutrality by 2060? We believe that "carbon reduction" would be a more appropriate way to do so.

Regarding the issue of "carbon reduction" in each industry sector, the effect and the way it is manifested will be different depending on the channel. According to China's national conditions, carbon emissions can be roughly divided into three fields, namely, construction, transportation and industry, among which the carbon reduction in the construction field will be the top priority.

China's building base is already very large, but more than 90% of these existing buildings are high-energy-consuming buildings, while the proportion of new buildings that meet the standards for environmental protection is less than 10%. According to the China Building Energy Consumption Research Report (2020), the total carbon emission of the whole process of building in 2018 was 4.93 billion tCO2, accounting for 51.3% of the national carbon emission.

When we review the total carbon emissions in 2020 again, the carbon emissions released within the building sector speak for themselves.

To this end, the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development, the National Development and Reform Commission and seven other departments have issued a special "Action Plan for the Creation of Environmentally Friendly Buildings", which requires that by 2022, the proportion of environmentally friendly construction area in new buildings in urban areas will reach 70%, the proportion of assembled construction methods will steadily increase, and the application of environmentally friendly building materials will further expand.

Environmentally friendly buildings

It is easy to see that both from the perspective of data and local and even national policies, energy saving and carbon reduction in the field of construction are very important, that is, to promote the field of environmentally friendly buildings, will be one of the main areas to promote the development of the future carbon market, and will also be an important part of the early achievement of the "carbon neutral" goal.

Sayyas started the near-zero energy renovation plan for Nanjing office building in 2021, according to the requirements of the national technical standards for near-zero energy consumption public buildings, through performance-based design, on the basis of reasonable control of incremental costs, to achieve a comfortable and healthy indoor air environment, while significantly reducing operating electricity consumption, with the aim of creating a model project with high standards of technology and environment, to take the lead in advocating the implementation of environmentally friendly buildings and to help achieve the goal of "carbon neutrality".

In the future, Sayyas will continue to expand in the field of energy-saving building windows and continue to provide professional system solutions for environmental protection building window openings.
